| It is 5:35 in the morning, and I can't seem to sleep. I'm
guessing it's from all the caffeine I've consumed, so I'll be rambling
about random thoughts that have been crossing my mind.
I have
been thinking a lot about the undergraduate UC system compared to the Cal State and
Community College systems for impacted courses like Biology, Chemistry,
etc. Since I have and still am experiencing them, the topic has been
in multiple conversations I have had with different people. I can
honestly say that the UC system made me feel like an ant. I felt so
unimportant in a class size of 450 people, and dumb. There was always
someone in the class who somehow was able to get that A+ and is that
much smarter, making an unsatisfying curve. Even after I had devoured
my textbook inside/out, I somehow just couldn't get the grade I
wanted. So yes, I felt like an ant. When I say "I devoured my
textbook," I actually mean it. Most professors didn't really care
about teaching (some did, and I was thankful to have had them as my
professors), which meant that in order to get that grade, I had to have
learned it myself. Great, I worked and paid for my B.S. diploma.
Currently,
I'm actually attending a Cal state and community college to enhance my
studies. I'm not sure if it is because of the courses that I am taking
has less people enrolled, but I feel much different in these two
systems. Mostly, I don't feel robbed of my tuition fees. The
professors actually teach the information rather than monotonously lecture their
way through powerpoint slides and throw a midterm and final exam
and offer a grade. These professors actually take the time to answer
questions, reiterate anything confusing, interact with the students,
and TEACH. My professors know MY NAME. I feel human. I know UC's are more about research, but do students really
need to sit in a lecture hall stuffed with people and have the
professors just read off PowerPoint slides? I have only one word to
describe them: Monopoly.
I was going to write more of my random thoughts, but I think the caffeine is wearing off.
